There are counties in eastern Washington that would like to merge due to low population and a desire for efficiency but can not do so without legislative action. There are segments of counties in western Washington that desire to separate from their county by creating a new county but can not do so without legislative action.
A group of concerned citizens has gotten together to sponsor an Initiative to the Legislature to create law establishing rules for creation of new counties including the merging of existing counties; allowing citizens to have the final say in how counties represent them. It requires the collection of 250,000 signatures by early July. The goal is to get this on the November 2006 ballot.
John Hearing, Acting Chair of the Yes on County Choice initiative will provide many more details and hopes to enlist your support by endorsement, financial contribution or donation of your life energy to this effort. Additional information can be found at www.countychoice.org. They can be contacted at info [a*t] countychoice.org or 206.312.0994. Mr. Hearing’s comments will be followed by a Q & A session.
I believe the Libertarian Party of Washington State and the Libertarian Party of King County should endorse Yes on County Choice. Your help is needed!
